Before the first time I ever tried an açaí bowl I didn’t really know what açaí was. I started seeing them more and more in different juice bars and in restaurants that would serve healthy food options. The açaí berry is actually considered a super fruit jammed packed with nutrients and tons of antioxidants. It is also believed to lower cholesterol as well as possess anti cancer properties.
Finally, I decided to give it a try. I figured what would be the worst that could happen? That I didn’t like it? If I didn’t, then I would know and simply move on. At least I tried it, right?
However, that wasn’t the case at all! From the first spoonful I LOVED it. My eyes opened wide in amazement. It was almost like eating ice cream without all the guilt afterwards! On the contrary, it contributes positively towards your health. Imagine eating a cold creamy flavorful fruity bowl of goodness. A smoothie bowl with toppings! What’s not to love about that?!
That being said, I found myself ordering these way too often, and they aren’t exactly friendly on the pockets. So I thought to myself, “Can I make these at home?” As I did my research I came across several açaí options I could buy to make at home. Some frozen and some powder. I find that the frozen açaí purée provides the best ice cream-like consistency.
I found an organic açaí blend from Sambazon at Costco, which is perfect. I combine this with some other frozen organic fruit mix and it’s absolutely amazing.
Ingredients:
1 packet of açaí from Sambazon
1 cup of frozen fruit mix (I personally like a berry mix)
1/2 cup of plant base milk of choice
1 Tbs of peanut butter (or any nut butter of choice)
Suggestions for toppings:
Granola
Nuts
Fresh Fruit
Chia seeds
Pumpkin Seeds
Anything your little heart desires!
Place all ingredients (except toppings) into a flood processor. Blend until smooth. If it seems a bit lumpy, add more milk until desired consistency. If it’s too runny, add more fruit to thicken up.
Serve in a bowl and add your toppings! For the average price of two or three açaí bowls purchased at a restaurant, you can have 12 right at home custom made to your liking.
I now make sure to keep stock of these ingredients so I could make myself an açaí bowl whenever the craving strikes.
